religion is like ethnicity
Persuading a Christian to reject his religion is like asking me to give up my ethnicity. My identity is so tied together with being a Korean-American that it is nearly impossible for me to accept the idea that I can not be a Korean-American. Any rational argument to persuade me that kimchi and korean food are inferior will never work because that's just the type of food I enjoy. Similarly, asking a Christian to denounce his faith is essentially asking him to reject what his closest friends and family believe, his identity, his heritage. No rational argument, no matter how true will work. You are attacking him. How can one reject oneself? That process can only occur when that person is ready to change.
